Why Aix is so well suited to a first meeting
The historic centre of Aix fits into a single stroll. You can meet at a fountain, have a drink, then walk ten minutes to a museum or a garden without ever getting back in the car. That continuity is precious: it lets you naturally extend a date that is going well, or simply wrap it up if that is as far as it goes.
The other advantage is the atmosphere. Aix lives outdoors for much of the year, its squares are lively without being overwhelming, and the setting does part of the work: it is hard to run out of things to talk about among the grand townhouses, the markets and the plane trees.
A drink on the Cours Mirabeau
It is the obvious address, and it deserves its reputation. Lined with plane trees and elegant façades, the Cours Mirabeau is a row of terraces looking out on passers-by and moss-covered fountains. For a first drink, it could hardly be simpler: everyone knows where it is.
Arrange to meet at the Fontaine de la Rotonde, at the bottom of the Cours: it is a landmark you cannot miss. Then pick a terrace slightly away from the foot traffic, and favour a weekday late afternoon, which is calmer than a Saturday. The most prominent terraces are also the noisiest; a table at the end of a row will let you hear each other.
The central squares: Cardeurs and Hôtel de Ville
Place des Cardeurs is one of the liveliest spots in the centre: a large pedestrian square surrounded by terraces, very popular in the evening. The mood is friendly, a little younger than on the Cours, and it is easy to find a table for a drink or a light dinner.
Close by, the Place de l’Hôtel de Ville, with its clock tower and handsome façades, offers a more classic setting, enlivened on some mornings by the market. A late-morning coffee on this square, followed by a wander through the nearby lanes, makes a perfect daytime date for anyone who would rather skip the aperitif format.
The Quartier Mazarin, for a quieter drink
South of the Cours Mirabeau, the Quartier Mazarin forms a grid of quiet streets lined with grand townhouses. It is the ideal spot if you are after a more intimate feel: a discreet wine bar, a small terrace on a peaceful square, streets where you can walk without being jostled.
After your drink, a stroll to the Fontaine des Quatre-Dauphins, in the heart of the quarter, makes a natural transition. It is one of the most charming places in Aix at dusk, and a good moment to find out whether you both feel like carrying on.
A cultural date: Musée Granet and Hôtel de Caumont
If you prefer a daytime first date, culture is an excellent ally. The Musée Granet, in the Mazarin quarter, holds collections ranging from the old masters to Cézanne, a son of the city. The Hôtel de Caumont, a superb eighteenth-century townhouse, hosts temporary exhibitions and has a formal French garden.
An hour’s visit is enough: it gives you something to talk about, reveals each other’s tastes and avoids awkward silences. Finish with a drink or a cup of tea nearby to share your impressions. Check the programme in advance so you can suggest an exhibition you are both likely to enjoy.
Getting some air: Parc Jourdan, Pavillon Vendôme and Terrain des Peintres
For an outdoor meeting, Aix has several gardens a few minutes from the centre. Parc Jourdan, a large wooded park, is perfect for a quiet walk. The Pavillon Vendôme, a seventeenth-century residence surrounded by a formal French garden, is a more secluded gem, ideal for walking and talking.
Further north, the Terrain des Peintres offers an open view of the Sainte-Victoire mountain, the one Cézanne painted so many times. At sunset it is magnificent. It is a little out of the way: make your own way there and choose a time when there are still people around.
How to plan it: timing, length, format
The best first date is often the simplest. A few pointers to organise it without stress:
When the bill comes, the most graceful rule is not to make an issue of it: offering to split, or to treat next time, puts everyone at ease.
- Suggest a specific time rather than a vague “let’s meet up this week”
- Go for a weekday late afternoon or early evening, calmer than the weekend
- Plan a short format, an hour to an hour and a half, which you can extend if it goes well
- Choose a meeting point that is easy to find, such as the Fontaine de la Rotonde
- Think about parking: the centre is largely pedestrian, so it is best to walk, take the bus or park on the edge of the centre
Feeling at ease: a few safety reflexes
A first date with someone you barely know deserves a few precautions, none of which takes away from the charm of the moment. Choose a public, lively place, tell a friend where you are going and when, and make your own way there so you are free to leave whenever you like.
Avoid isolated places for a first meeting, however beautiful they may be, and save hikes on the Sainte-Victoire for later. Finally, listen to your instincts: politely cutting short a date that makes you uncomfortable is always legitimate.
And if you click?
If the conversation flows, Aix is wonderful for extending the evening: a walk through the lamp-lit lanes, dinner in the neighbourhood, or simply the wish to see each other again. For next time, the region has no shortage of ideas: a hike on the slopes of the Sainte-Victoire, a day in a village of the pays d’Aix, the exhibition you talked about.
Do not try to fit everything into the first evening. Leaving a little something for next time is often the best sign that a first date went well.
Let Aparté organise your first date
Finding the right place, matching diaries, exchanging dozens of messages before meeting: this is often where new connections run out of steam. Aparté turns the problem around. After an in-depth questionnaire inspired by matchmaking agencies, the app suggests one compatible person a week, with three concrete reasons. Every profile is verified by the team using a selfie.
Each of you ranks three public venues and shares your available slots; the date is set for the first common slot, at the compromise venue. No chatting before you meet. Afterwards, each of you says privately whether you want to see the other again, and the conversation only opens on a mutual yes. The app is launching in Aix-en-Provence and Marseille; people on the waitlist get their first match free.
Frequently asked questions
Where can I go for a drink in Aix-en-Provence on a first date?
The Cours Mirabeau is the most obvious choice: central, elegant and easy to find. For a livelier atmosphere, Place des Cardeurs is full of terraces. If you want more privacy, the Quartier Mazarin and its discreet wine bars are perfect. Wherever you go, choose a table slightly away from the foot traffic so you can hear each other.
What can we do in Aix for a daytime first date?
A coffee on the Place de l’Hôtel de Ville, an exhibition at the Musée Granet or the Hôtel de Caumont, then a walk in Parc Jourdan or the gardens of the Pavillon Vendôme make a pleasant, pressure-free plan. These activities give you ready-made topics of conversation and are easy to shorten or extend depending on how you get on.
How long should a first date last?
An hour to an hour and a half is a good length for a first drink. It is long enough to get to know each other without getting stuck if the chemistry is not quite there. If it goes well, nothing stops you from extending it with a walk or dinner. It is better to part wanting to see each other again than feeling you have said it all.
Where can I park for a date in central Aix?
The historic centre of Aix is largely pedestrian and parking is limited. The easiest option is to come on foot, by bike or by bus, or to use one of the car parks on the edge of the centre and walk the rest of the way. Allow a few minutes’ margin so you do not arrive in a rush.
